19 Easy Fall Porch Ideas to Try This Year
Updated: Sep 21

There is something about decorating the front porch for fall that makes the whole house feel ready for the season. The best part is that you don't need a huge porch or a ton of decorations to create a beautiful fall entrance.
I like to start with a few larger pieces, then layer in pumpkins, mums, baskets, lanterns, and cozy textures. Keeping the colors consistent helps everything feel intentional without looking overly decorated.
Whether you love a neutral fall porch or traditional autumn colors, these 19 easy fall porch ideas will help you create an entrance you love coming home to.
1. Start With a Fall Wreath
A fall wreath is one of the easiest ways to change your porch for the season. Look for one with realistic leaves, dried-looking stems, berries, or muted florals. If you prefer neutral decor, try a wreath with eucalyptus, cream accents, or brown foliage. A larger wreath also makes more of an impact, especially if your front door needs a focal point. These are my favorite wreaths to use along with the best season ribbon to use for the finishing touch.
2. Layer Your Doormats
Layering rugs instantly makes your front door look more styled.
Start with a larger outdoor rug in a simple pattern, then place a smaller fall doormat on top.
Black and white, plaid, stripes, and neutral patterns work well underneath a seasonal mat and transition easily into other seasons. Shop my favorites HERE
3. Mix Real and Faux Pumpkins
You don't have to choose between real and faux pumpkins.
Mix both.
Use larger real pumpkins around the base of your display, then add faux pumpkins in different shapes, colors, and sizes.
The combination gives you a fuller look without buying dozens of fresh pumpkins every year. Shop my favorites HERE.
4. Decorate With Oversized Pumpkins
Instead of filling your porch with lots of tiny decorations, use a few oversized pieces.
Large pumpkins make more of an impact and help anchor your display.
Place them near the door, beside planters, or at the bottom of your steps. Here are some of my favs to use.
5. Add Mums
Mums are a fall porch classic for a reason. Place large mums in baskets, planters, or decorative pots rather than leaving them in their original containers. Cream, burgundy, rust, yellow, and deep orange all look beautiful for fall. Use faux mums as a way to avoid them dying too early or for longer lasting porch decor. These are my favorite faux plants to use.
6. Put Your Mums in Baskets
This is one of my favorite ways to make inexpensive mums look more expensive.
Place the entire potted mum inside a large woven basket. You don't even need to replant it.
The basket adds warmth and texture while hiding the basic plastic planter. These are my favorite baskets to use.
7. Add Fall Trees
Small faux fall trees are an easy way to add height to your porch.
Place one on each side of your front door or use one tree paired with pumpkins and mums for an asymmetrical look.
Pre-lit fall trees look especially pretty in the evening.
8. Use Lanterns for Height
Lanterns help fill empty spaces between pumpkins and planters. Use two or three different sizes and add flameless candles inside. Place them near your front door, on your steps, or tucked into a larger pumpkin display. These are my favorite lanterns to use in all my porch decor!
9. Create an Asymmetrical Display
Your fall porch doesn't need to match perfectly on both sides.
Try placing a taller arrangement on one side of the door with a fall tree, mum, pumpkins, and lanterns. Keep the opposite side simpler.
An asymmetrical arrangement often feels more relaxed and gives you room to play with different heights.
10. Stick With a Simple Color Palette
Choose three or four colors before you start decorating.
For a neutral porch, try cream, brown, black, and muted green.
For a traditional fall look, use orange, rust, burgundy, and brown.
Repeating the same colors throughout your display makes everything feel connected.
11. Try a Neutral Fall Porch
Fall decorating doesn't have to mean bright orange. Use white and cream pumpkins, natural wood, woven baskets, beige planters, and muted greenery. Then add a small amount of rust or brown for warmth. This works especially well if your home's exterior already has a neutral color palette. I gathered all my favorite neutral porch decor HERE for you to check out.
12. Add a Fall Door Sign
If you don't want a wreath, try a decorative fall sign.
A simple wood sign leaning beside the door adds height and fills an empty area without requiring much styling.
Choose something with minimal wording so it doesn't compete with the rest of your porch.
13. Decorate Your Steps
If your front porch has steps, use them as part of the display. Place pumpkins along one side of the stairs and mix in a few mums or lanterns. Use these festive ghosts along the steps, they are my favorite to add because they light up! Keep the walking path clear so the arrangement looks full without getting in the way.
14. Use Decorative Planters
Your everyday outdoor planters don't need to disappear once summer ends. Swap summer flowers for mums, ornamental grasses, faux fall stems, or seasonal branches. Then surround the planters with pumpkins to connect them to the rest of your fall porch. I love using any of these planters, especially to create varying degrees of height.
15. Add Cozy Textures
If you have a bench or chair on your porch, give it a fall update. Add an outdoor pillow in plaid, rust, brown, or cream. You can also drape a throw blanket over the back for photos or when you're entertaining outside. Look for fabrics designed for outdoor use if they'll stay outside throughout the season.
16. Add Warm Lighting
Your porch should look as good at night as it does during the day. Add battery-operated candles inside lanterns, string lights around a doorway, or use prelit fall trees. Timers make seasonal lighting even easier because everything turns on automatically each evening. Of check out these linear solar lights. They charge during the day, turn on automatically at night, and give off the perfect glow without any wiring or complicated installation. Not only do they make the stairs easier to navigate after dark, great for Trick or Treaters, but they also make the entire walkway feel more custom and high-end. Check them out HERE.
17. Fill Empty Spaces With Smaller Pumpkins
Once your larger pieces are in place, look for awkward gaps.
Small pumpkins are perfect for filling them.
Tuck them between lanterns, baskets, planters, and larger pumpkins instead of spreading them evenly across the porch.
This helps the arrangement feel layered.
18. Carry Your Fall Decor Beyond the Front Door
If you have space, extend your fall decorating beyond the immediate doorway.
Add a mum or pumpkin near a porch bench, walkway, garage entrance, or outdoor seating area.
Repeating a few of the same elements helps the entire exterior feel connected.
19. Choose Fall Decor You Can Reuse
Before buying another seasonal decoration, think about whether you'll use it again next year.
Faux pumpkins, lanterns, baskets, outdoor rugs, wreaths, and fall trees are worth storing because you can style them differently each season. Then use fresh mums and a few real pumpkins to make the display feel new each year. These are my favorite all year around decor that I can use for any season. These candles and lanterns are weather resistant, timer controlled, and come with a remote so you can turn everything on without walking around lighting each one individually.
